O NAS / ABOUT

In May 2015, one part of the Pici Bici collective decided to take part in the unsupported bicycle adventure called the Tuscany Trail. We came home with good memories and an idea to try and organize something like this in our country. To be honest, this idea has been stuck in our mind for quite some time, but it seems like we needed to experience something that would give us a confirmation that it’s possible to do this kind of things on low budget, if you have the will and capability to do it. We started connecting the familiar roads, exploring the unfamiliar terrains and slowly the idea of our race progressed. We wanted something that would be really tough on one hand, but still interesting to as many cyclists a possible on the other. And so, the DUST LUST was born.

To cycle 170km and 2500m of elevation is not an easy task for a recreational cyclist, and if you throw 70% of gravel and an unmarked route into the mix the race is destined to be tough as hell. We wanted to give the cyclists a similar experience to what we’ve been through in Italy… We wanted them to come prepared and to think about everything in the days before the race. To study the equipment, make it better and check out what the others are using. But mostly, we wanted them to challenge themselves, to get lost in the middle of forests, far from civilization, and look around. Hopefully, they’ll see what this race is all about, because it’s not about being the fastest and the most prepared, it’s about the experience, about being out there, enjoying nature and appreciating it. Judging by the smiles on the faces at the finish line, we’ve succeeded!

Several months of work, confusion and stress have paid off on the 24th of October, 2015, when 42 cyclists turned up at the starting line. Riding cyclocross bikes, hard tails, full suspensions… some using bike packing bags, some using racks, some using nothing but a couple of energy gels while some carrying lunch boxes and all sorts of gadgets. We even had a guy carrying a box of pizza on his rack throughout the race! And that’s just what we wanted, to get people from all over Slovenia together, no matter what bikes they are using and face with a test that’s the same for everyone. No matter their capabilities, each and every one of them could face some problems along the way, be it a puncture, a missed turn, or simple exhaustion. By no ones surprise, the winner of the road category was Matej Mohorič, a two times road world champion, and the winners of the MTB category were two of the best amateur cyclists in Slovenia, Matej Lovše and Lenart Noč. But it seems like the results had a secondary importance, everyone was here to experience something new and enjoy a beautiful day on the bike. It was amazing to listen to all the stories at the finish line, as everyone experienced something unique and they were all happy with how the day turned out.

Dust Lust #1 was a success, as organizers we are really satisfied with the amount of riders who participated and their positive approach. It’s really honorable for us that some of the best riders in the country participated in our event. We think that this is proof of how bikes can do good and connect people, and that we’re still all riding bikes for pleasure, even if it’s type2 kind of pleasure, the one that you can only feel after the race is over.

Prišli so s ciklokros kolesi, trdaki, full suspension-i, s torbami, brez torb.
